Born in Hiroshima in 1987, Hiroko Kubo lives and works in Chiba, Japan.
She graduated from the Sculpture Department at Hiroshima City University and received an MFA from Texas Christian University. Drawing on research into folk art and cultural anthropology, Kubo creates sculptures using industrial and everyday materials such as wire mesh, blue tarpaulins, windbreak netting, and steel. Her work revisits myths, prayer, idols, natural threats, the destruction and regeneration of artifacts, and representations of women historically pushed to the margins, reconsidering forms of beauty and belief embedded in everyday life from a contemporary perspective.
Recent solo exhibitions include Steel Framed Goddess (2024, Pola Museum Annex, Tokyo). She has participated in the Setouchi Triennale 2016 and Saitama Triennale 2020, Aichi Triennale 2025, among other art festivals. She received the Hiroshima Cultural Newcomer Award in 2022 and the Rokko Meets Art Competition Grand Prize in 2017. Since 2017, she has run Alternative Space CORE in Hiroshima.
