Born in Hyogo in 1979, Sumi Kanazawa is a Korean national based in Japan.
Through her practice, Kanazawa explores the enduring contradiction of human existence: that each individual is unique, yet at the same time, only one part of a larger collective. Her large-scale installations give form to an in-between realm that emerges through the shifting relationship between the individual and the collective.
Recent exhibitions include We, Such Fragile Beings (2025–2026, PODO Museum, South Korea), FATHOM—Chiharu Shiota, Sumi Kanazawa, Soh Souen (2023, Kyoto Seika University Gallery Terra-S, Kyoto), her solo exhibition Erase and See (2023, Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, London), and Listen to the Sound of the Earth Turning: Our Wellbeing since the Pandemic (2022, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo). She is currently participating in Bangkok Art Biennale 2026.
